The collective Plañideras Culturales (a literal translation is "Cultural Mourners") is the result of a collaboration between a group of artists and activists who became involved in the project Recorridos por Zonas Precarias organised by artist Paula Valero in 2011.

Inspired by the centuries old custom of paying women to wail and weep at funerals- a service which still exists in countries like Mexico and southern Italy, the group uses this aesthetic to criticise the contemporary cultural panorama in the context of closing theatres and galleries, cutbacks in the arts, etc... in Valencia and beyond. It also satires the image of the misunderstood artist, using a physical expression of angst, pain and suffering to radicalise this unease.

In a series of public actions at demonstrations, exhibition openings and the impromptu closing ceremony for the alternative art space La Clinica Mundana we have offered a range of merchandising and services which can be consulted here

El colectivo Plañideras Culturales es el resultado de una colaboración entre un grupo de artistas y activistas que participaron en el proyecto Recorridos por Zonas Precarias organizado por el artista Paula Valero en el 2011.

Inspirado por la tradición de pagar a las mujeres para plañir en los funerales - un servicio que todavía existe en países como Méjico y en el sur de Italia- el grupo utiliza esta estética para criticar el panorama cultural contemporánea y el contexto de cierre de galerías y teatros, recortes en los artes, etc.... en Valencia y fuera. Satiriza la imagen del artista torturado, utilizando un expresión físico de angustia, dolor y sufrimiento para radicalizar nuestro malestar.
