The Journey (June-Aug 2015) is a living art piece which spans the three months I spent rediscovering my roots on my first extended stay in Scotland since I left in 1999. In summer 2015 I travelled to Scotland to work on the Unfix Festival of Performace and Ecology. On my first day back I happened to walk into a local library where a book sale was going on and discovered "Soil and Soul" a book whose author -by sheer coincidence- was to give a performance lecture at the festival a few days later. Amongst other things the book told the story of how the inhabitants of the remote Hebridean island of Eigg had battled to buy the land off an absentee landowner in 1997. The book and lecture inspired a journey to the island where I spent three days camping, treking and exploring its coastline, hills and culture. Despite having a population of under 100 the island has three small museums, hosts regular artists residencies and has a lively music scene.
Before going to Eigg I had travelled to Cape Wrath, most northerly point of Britain with my brother and nephews on a family holiday which would take me to the dramatic landscape of another island, Skye.
From Eigg I travelled south to Galloway to finish off the summer at EAFS Offgrid Festival. One of the main themes of the festival was journeying and the festival organisers had encouraged visitors to travel to the remote rural location in the most environmentally friendly way possible. I cycled there in the company of the wonderful young artist Rosie Malachi. We set off through driving rain along the Auchencairn coast but as we turned inland and towards the uplands of Galloway the weather changed and for the rest of the weekend stayed dry. Somehow it seemed this final leg was only a small part of a journey which started in a university office in Spain when I had applied for an Erasmus grant to travel to Unfix.

The Journey June-Aug 2015 es una pieza de living art que abarca los tres meses que pasé en Escocia redescubriendo mis raíces en mi primera estancia prolongada desde que me fui de alli en 1999. Viajé a Escocia para trabajar en el festival de performance y ecología Unfix. Mi primer día entre en una biblioteca local donde habia una venta de libros usados y descubri "Soil and Soul" un libro cuyo autor -por pura coincidencia- daba una performance-conferencia como parte del festival Unfix. Entre otras cosas el libro narra la historia de la lucha de los habitantes para comprar su isla de un terrateniente ausente en 1997. El libro y la perfromance inspiraron un viaje a la remota isla donde pasé tres días acampando, caminando y explorando la costa, las montañas y la cultura de esta fascinante isla. A pesar de tener una población de menos de 100 inhabitantes la isla tiene tres museos, alberga residencias de artistas y tiene una animada escena musical.
Antes de ir a Eigg había viajado a Cabo Wrath, el punto más septentrional de Gran Bretaña con mi hermano y sobrinos en un vacación familiar que me llevaría al paisaje dramático de otra isla, Skye.
Desde Eigg viajé hacia el sur hasta Galloway para terminar el verano en el festival EAFS Offgrid. Uno de los temas principales del festival era viajar y los organizadores del festival habían animado a los visitantes a viajar de la manera más respetuosa con el medio ambiente posible a su remota localidad rural. Viajé por dos dias en bicicleta en compania de la maravillosa artista joven Rosie Malachi. Nos pusimos en marcha a través de la lluvia a lo largo de la costa de Auchencairn, pero cuando dejamos la costa y empezamos a viajar tierra adentro y hacia las tierras altas de Galloway, el clima cambió y para el resto del fin de semana se mantuvo seco. De alguna manera parecía que esta última etapa era sólo una pequeña parte de un viaje que comenzó en una oficina de la universidad en España cuando yo había solicitado una beca Erasmus para viajar a Unfix.
