Cabaret Pieces (1994- )


Cabaret (def) : entertainment held in a nightclub or restaurant while the audience eat or drink at tables.Because of the more relaxed atmosphere in which it takes place, cabaret is a genre where sexuality and desire can be explored with more liberty than in other contexts. The barrier between audience and performer is less well defined than in other contexts.

Many of my live presentations evoke this atmosphere with their mixture of transgender politics, ironic humour and music. My first full length cabaret show was part of the conceptual art event OTV - an art project broadcasting live images onto the street from the studio inside a cafe on the main street of the rural town of Castle Douglas in south west Scotland. Since then I´ve performed in a wide variety of venues including Chat´s Palace, The Royal Vauxhall Tavern and the Erotic Awards (London), Club Vegas (Amsterdam), Madame Jasmine (Barcelona), Pepica la Pilona, Oximoron and the Cabañal Intim Festival (Valencia).

Xativa Exdragavanza
Cabaret presented by Juana la Cubana, once a resident at Madame Jojo´s (London), at La Nau Socarrada in Xativa with a cast of local artists, many of whom had never performed before. A mixture of playbacks, synchronised swimming and performance in which I carry out a hommage to Antoñita Peñuela and "El Titi" flamboyant gay singer whose song Liberate was a gay athem during the Transition. The first night (in November 2022) was such a success it looks like turning into a regular event.

Revolt of the Carolinas
I carried out a recreation of the first trans demonstration with legendary cabaret artist Rampova Kabaret at the SGAE in Valencia in December 2017. This uprising took place in Barcelona in 1933 when a bomb went off in a public toilet used for cottaging and male prostitution. A group of transvestites known as "Las Carolinas" processed down the main Rambla towards the site weeping and wailing before laying their floral tributes by the destroyed urinals.

Cabaret Clandestino Corrosivo Charivari

Between February and June 2017 I collaborated with La Diva and Madame Charivari in the organisation of this monthly Cabaret held in La Tapadera (Valencia). Each month we hosted a glittering array of special guests and prepared performances related to that month´s theme- including a Valentine day´s special in February, a Fallas spectacular in March and a celebration of the Spanish Republic in April.

Cabañal Intim

The Cabañal is a neighbourhood in Valencia which was under threat by local government plans to build an avenue through it and "modernise" this traditional area whose art deco houses used to house the fishers who lived here. Local people organised themsleves in protest against these plans organising cultural events and festivals to bring attention to the problem. I have performed in a wide variety of spaces in the neighbourhood (Pepica la Pilona is one) and supported the recent "Cabañal Intim" initiative- an intimate theatre festival which takes place in the houses of residents.

It includes footage of my performance with Rampova Cabaret, and as part of the collective Plañideras Culturales a group of artist/activists of which I form part.

Pepica´s Kafeta Kabaret

A group of art students collaborated in the production of monthly Kafeta Kabarets over a period of 12 months in 2004-2005. I documented the event and appeared regularly with other artists including Rampova Cabaret, Los Amanerados (The Effeminates) and its MC/host Monsieur Demode.

The building had originally been used for shipbuilding but had become a popular "Centro Social Ocupado Anarquista"(anarchist squatted social centre) with regular punk concerts. I produced my first "histeria" based loosely on its history and the history of Pepica the gypsy woman who had lived in the barrio many years before. Legends abounded about her exploits as a prostitute and contrabandista and I told her story in words, music and video adding more fuel to the fire.

El cabaré es un espacio donde la sexualidad y el deseo se explora con más libertad que en otros contextos. En un cabaret la barrera entre la audiencia y el performer es menos definido que en otros contextos y el ambiente relajado da rienda suelta a la expresión de sexualidades alternativas. Lxs artistas de cabaré mezclan el teatro musical, el vodevil y el burlesque para ironizar y hacer una crítica al poder.

Muchas de mis presentaciones evocan este ambiente con su mezcla de humor, música y política transgenero, aunque en general prefiero actuar fuera del ambiente típico cabaretero. Mi primer actuación fue en OTV un proyecto artístico donde se proyectaba las imágenes en directo en la calle principal de Castle Douglas, un pueblo de Escocia. Desde entonces he actuado en gran variedad de sitios incluyendo Chat´s Palace, The Royal Vauxhall Tavern y The Erotic Awards(London), Club Vegas (Amsterdam), Madame Jasmine (Barcelona), Pepica la Pilona, Oximoron y el Festival Cabañal Intim (Valencia).

Cabaret presentado por Juana la Cubana, ex-residente de Madame Jojo´s (Londres), en La Nau Socarrada de Xàtiva con un elenco de artistas locales, muchos de los cuales nunca habían actuado antes. Una mezcla de playbacks, natación sincronizada y performance en la que realizo un homenaje a Antoñita Peñuela y "El Titi" extravagante cantante gay cuya canción Libérate fue un himno gay durante la Transición. La primera noche (en noviembre de 2022)tuvo tanto éxito que parece que va a convertirse en un evento regular.

Realice una recreación de la primera manifestación trans con el artista leyendario de cabaré, Rampova Kabaret en el SGAE de Valencia en diciembre 2017. Este levantamiento tuvo lugar en Barcelona en 1933, cuando estalló una bomba en un baño público utilizado para el ligue y la prostitución masculina. Un grupo de travestis conocido como "Las Carolinas" procesó por la Rambla principal hacia el sitio llorando y lamentando antes de colocar sus tributos florales en los urinarios destruidos.

Entre febrero y junio de 2017 colaboré con La Diva y Madame Charivari en la organización de este Cabaret mensual celebrado en La Tapadera (Valencia). Cada mes presentamos una deslumbrante variedad de invitados especiales y preparamos turnos relacionadas con el tema del mes, que incluyeron un especial San Valentín en febrero, un espectáculo de Fallas en marzo y una celebración de la República Española en abril.

Un grupo de estudiantes de bellas artes colaboraron en la producción mensual de los Kafeta
Kabarés por un periodo de 12 meses en 2004-2005 y yo documentaba y actuaba a menudo colaborando con otros artistas como Rampova Cabaret, Los Amanerados y su MC/anfitrión Monsieur Demode.

El edificio, originalmente un almacén de barcos era un C.S.O.A. popular por sus conciertos de música punk. Alli presenté mi primer "histeria" basado libremente en su historia y la historia de la gitana "Pepica" quien había vivido en el barrio hace años. La leyenda contaba que ella era prostituta y contrabandista y yo conté su historia en palabras, canciones y con proyecciones en video poniendo mas leña al fuego.
